How Many Business Cards Should You Order?

One business ordered a thousand cards and used ninety. Another ran out of five hundred in three weeks.

A new business owner orders a thousand cards for launch week. A year later, nine hundred of them are still sitting in a drawer. Meanwhile, a trader working a market stall daily runs through five hundred cards in three weeks with no fast way to reorder.

Same product, two completely different outcomes. The right print run depends on how the card actually gets used, not on a round number that felt safe to order.

The standard business card is 3.5 × 2 inches, sized to fit a wallet, a card holder or a badge sleeve. That part is fixed. What isn't fixed is how fast a given role burns through a stack. Someone attending a handful of meetings a month uses cards at a completely different rate than someone handing them out daily.

The practical fix is to stop guessing the total up front. Order a smaller batch first, especially for a new design or a new role, and watch how fast it actually moves. A reorder of an identical design is quicker and cheaper than the first print run, since there's no new design or proofing step to repeat.

Getting the first number wrong isn't really the failure. Never having a plan to reorder is. A card only earns its cost while it's in someone's pocket, not sitting in a drawer.
